Core of the Core

Alumni Discussion Group

This discussion group is intended for not-so-recent alumni that miss the analysis and stimulation of classes like Human Being and Citizen.  The group began meeting in March.  Members of the group read portions of great works and gather together to exchange insights and thoughts.  It is a cross between a class and a book club, where members of a discussion group read portions of great works and then discuss them together.

In June we discussed Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics.  Our next meeting is Tuesday, July 17th, 7pm to 8:30pm, where we will discuss selected chapters of St. Augustine’s Confessions, followed in September by our potluck discussion in which participants are asked to talk about a favorite philosopher that they would like others to know about.  That meeting is on Tuesday, September 25th.  If you have ever been in a setting where you have wanted to wanted to talk about a certain writer, but held back because you suspected the social occasion was not quite right, this is your moment.

If you are interested in coming, please contact Bill Funk, AB’93, at for more details on the readings and for any other questions you have.
